My name is Michael Jenkins Jr. and I have been a web/graphic engineer for over 10+ years now. I started young, winning art awards dating back to the 1st grade, the first being a sketch of the school mascot (a mountain lion), where everyone was amazed due to its realistic look. However, the parents of the other children accused me of “tracing…” So sadly enough there was a big commotion over the event, but eventually they gave me my prize.
Anywho, I learned how to deal with people at a young age. I also learned that there is always a small group of people that are years ahead of the game and are JUST AS GOOD AS YOU ARE IF NOT BETTER (there were other kids that were talented as well). Years later my dad brought home a “computer.” Being the type of child who was always curious, always taking things apart to see how they were built, I had to know everything about this computer.” It was more astonishing than any console gaming system at the time. It was a Packard Bell.
After messing around with it for hours/days on end, I was hooked. Knowing how creative I was, my fahja (or father) brought home a “CD-ROM” labeled “D3D.” Keep in mind, this is somewhere in the time-period of DOOM, before 3D cards were the “Rage” like “Voodoo3″ and “Geforce 3,” even before D3D stood for Direct3D…Wow, even before Duke Nukem 3D came packed with Wolfenstein 3D on a Shareware 3DRealms CD…or did they come on a floppy?
However, the name of the program was Dino3D. The MOST AMAZING PROGRAM EVER.It allowed me to choose from five or six different dinosaurs, where upon selected I was able to apply four different “effects” (gold, silver, wood, or wireframe), and then ROTATE THEM IN ALL THREE DIMENSIONS (3D), OMG. Yes, I was really hooked…and having the time of my life.
Falling in love with technology, I eventually found online gaming and every other activity you could do on a computer. I played both casually and professionally in various places, going back to the days of TEN, PGL, and the Thresh/Immy days…back when we all used IRC and ETG was the place to be. Through gaming, I met alot of amazing people, many who were very influential on my life, and vice-versa.
Back then, it was different…as the internet was mostly an older crowd. People used to be very respectful, willing to help with anything, when companies and their prospective community of consumers would work together for the sole purpose of moving forward together, when information was free, when only one person had to be banned from a chatroom instead of 1000 porn bots, back when you could type a run-on sentence this long and get away with it because people knew what you meant and not call the interweb grammar police (IGP).
Over the years, I’ve been able to grow with the design industry. Even though I have worked with some of the best, I believe that the most amazing thing over the course of my life as a web designer is being able to watch how design evolves, the web evolution as a whole, and the people whom have pushed it further. Unfortunately, since I started young, I was not able to fully take advantage of some of the opportunities that I have come across and was forced to stay low-key. Regardless, I made sure to grasp the logic, trends, concepts of the industry, and the thought processes of people in general to create my own opportunities later on.
Finally, I guess I can finally go ahead and get to the point an save the rest for my book. So, I have worked with clients that range from Lifestylz’ Clothing and HGTV, to OTH Ent., former management company of the Black Eyed Peas & La Ley. More recently I have done work for Universal Music Group/Verve to do work on artists such as: Elvis Costello, Ella Fitzgerald, Brazilian Girls, and Diana Krall. I have freelanced since forever but am about to take it to a new level. I am currently transitioning from providing services to managing my own projects to take up the majority of my time, but I will always make time for your projects as well. If I could stay up 24 hours like I used to, i would. Design is not a job, nor a hobby…its a lifestyle.
Enjoy the Pictures ;).
